OpenAI Just Confirmed It: Law Firms Can Now Advertise on ChatGPT

Law firms can now run ChatGPT ads. OpenAI's new policy makes legal services a permitted category in the US for licensed firms. Here's what changed.

The comment we keep seeing

The version of the comment usually goes something like this: “ChatGPT doesn’t allow legal ads, everyone knows that.” For most of 2026, that comment had some truth to it. OpenAI’s ad policy has gone through several revisions this year, and the legal services section spent months explicitly stating that ads for legal advice, representation, or legal services were not permitted.

That changed on August 31, 2026. OpenAI released version 1.5 of its ad policy, and the update is direct: legal services are now a permitted advertising category in the United States.

What OpenAI’s policy actually says now

Here’s the new language, straight from OpenAI’s ad policy page:

Ads for legal advice, representation, or legal services offered to individuals or businesses are permitted in the US only when the advertiser is licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad is shown. This includes services related to immigration, personal injury, legal claims, or document preparation. OpenAI ad policy, version 1.5

Three things stand out in that language:

  • Legal services ads are permitted in the US. Personal injury, immigration, document preparation, and other practice area ads are named directly as eligible.
  • The advertiser has to be licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad runs. This isn’t open to just anyone claiming to offer legal help. It has to be an actual licensed attorney or firm, advertising where they’re licensed to practice.
  • Legal services ads outside the US remain prohibited. This update is specific to the US market.

This builds on an earlier April 2026 update, which stopped OpenAI from categorically blocking any ad, from any business, inside a conversation that touched on legal topics. That earlier change addressed where ads could show up. This new update addresses who is allowed to be the advertiser, which is the piece that’s been missing until now.

Why the confusion took so long to clear up

Part of the reason so many comments and articles have gotten this wrong is that OpenAI’s policy moved several times over just a few months, and each version landed differently for law firms specifically. Placement rules loosened in April. Financial and health advertiser categories got clarified in July. Legal stayed in a gray, case by case zone through most of the summer, with older disallowed language sitting right next to newer language describing a manual approval path for the same category. Anyone who read the page in June and never went back has been working off outdated information for months.

That’s no longer the case. As of this update, the policy states plainly that licensed law firms can advertise, not that they might be approved someday.

Where SMB Team stands right now

SMB Team has already been leading firms through the ChatGPT Ads process, well ahead of this update becoming official. We know how the platform’s verification and setup process works because we’ve been in it, not because we read about it after the fact.

Most firms and agencies are just now catching up to the news. We’ve already been in this process with real firms.

Getting your firm’s ad account set up still involves a verification process on OpenAI’s side, including confirming your firm’s licensing. We handle that process for free and walk your firm through what’s required.

This sits alongside the rest of our law firm marketing work. ChatGPT Ads is a new channel, not a replacement for the ones already bringing your firm cases. It’s additive, and with legal services now a permitted category, it’s worth moving on quickly.

Why moving early still matters

Every new ad platform goes through a window where the earliest advertisers get more attention and less competition than the ones who wait. Right now, ChatGPT has roughly 900 million weekly users, and the people asking it legal questions tend to describe their whole situation rather than typing a short search term, which makes for a warm, ready to act lead when the ad experience is done right.

Clicks on an established platform like Google tend to run expensive for competitive legal keywords, often well into double digits per click and higher in competitive markets. Early ChatGPT ad activity has been running considerably cheaper, though exact costs will depend on your practice area and market, and are worth discussing directly with our team rather than relying on any number you read online.

Now that legal services are formally permitted, expect more firms and agencies to move on this quickly. The advantage goes to whoever gets set up first.

Questions we get about ChatGPT ads

Can law firms run ads on ChatGPT?

Yes. As of OpenAI’s August 2026 policy update, licensed law firms in the US can advertise legal services on ChatGPT, provided the advertiser is licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad is shown.

Does OpenAI allow legal services ads?

Yes. OpenAI’s ad policy now permits ads for legal advice, representation, and legal services in the US, including practice areas like personal injury, immigration, and document preparation.

Do law firms still need to go through a verification process?

Yes. Advertisers still need to be verified, including confirming licensure. SMB Team leads firms through this process for free, though OpenAI makes the final approval decision.

Can law firms outside the US advertise on ChatGPT?

No. Legal services ads outside the US remain prohibited under OpenAI’s current policy.

Do my state bar’s advertising rules still apply?

Yes. Your state bar’s advertising rules apply to any ad content your firm runs on ChatGPT, the same as they would on any other platform. The policy change is about what OpenAI permits, not about what your bar allows, so run your ChatGPT ad copy through the same compliance review you use everywhere else.
